Angkor Wat is one of the most awe-inspiring places on earth , but a little preparation goes a long way. Whether you're a first-time visitor or returning for another look, these five tips from our team at Villa Agati will help you make the most of your temple experience.
1. Start Early , Really Early
The classic Angkor Wat sunrise is worth the early alarm. Aim to arrive at the temple by 5:00 AM to secure a good spot near the reflecting pools. The sky begins to change colour around 5:30 AM, and by 6:15 AM the sun is above the towers. Not only is the light magical, but the morning hours are also the coolest part of the day , a huge advantage when you're walking for hours.
At Villa Agati, we arrange tuk-tuk pickup from 4:30 AM so you arrive with time to spare. We also prepare a packed breakfast so you don't miss a meal.
2. Buy Your Pass the Day Before
The Angkor ticket office is located on the road between Siem Reap and the temples. If you buy your pass after 5:00 PM the day before, you can enter the park that same evening for a free sunset at Phnom Bakheng , and your pass officially starts the next day. A one-day pass costs $37, three days $62, and a week $72. Bring your passport; your photo will be taken at the counter.
3. Dress Appropriately
Angkor Wat is an active religious site, and there is a dress code. Both men and women must cover their shoulders and knees. Lightweight, breathable clothing is best , think linen trousers and a cotton t-shirt. Comfortable walking shoes are essential; you'll cover 10-15 km on a full day tour. A hat and sunglasses help too, as there is very little shade between temples.
4. Bring Water and Sunscreen
Cambodia is hot. Temperatures regularly exceed 35°C, and the humidity can be intense, especially between March and May. Bring at least 2 litres of water per person, apply sunscreen generously, and take breaks in the shade when you can. Many temples have small shops selling cold drinks and snacks, so you won't go thirsty.
"We always tell our guests: pace yourself. The temples have been here for 900 years , there's no rush. Take your time, drink water, and enjoy every moment."
5. Hire a Local Guide
A knowledgeable guide transforms the experience. Instead of looking at beautiful but mysterious ruins, you'll understand the stories carved into the walls, the meaning behind the architecture, and the history of the Khmer Empire. English-speaking guides are available at the entrance to Angkor Wat, or we can arrange one in advance through the hotel. Expect to pay $25-35 for a half-day guide.
A guide also knows the best routes to avoid crowds and the perfect spots for photos , invaluable during peak season.
